“OH, MADAM, you mustn’t!”

Elizabeth repeated her instructions to the horrified butler. “Pack his things and see that he is taken to the inn in town.”

Ruckles didn’t move from his place at the foot of the main staircase. If she didn’t know better, she’d think the man was disappointed. He cleared his throat. “And what is to be done with Mrs. Martin?”

“She shall stay here until Monday morning, as we agreed.” No matter how upset she was, Elizabeth couldn’t toss that sweet, elderly woman out of the blue bedroom.

“And may I inquire what we should tell our guests as to Lord Longford’s whereabouts?”

“I’ll think of something,” she assured him. “He’ll go to London. An emergency. An illness of a relative. A business crisis.”

Ruckles looked ready to weep. “Business? What shall I say is Lord Longford’s occupation?”

“Food,” came the answer. Only the voice was low and amused and completely male. Elizabeth turned around to see Sam Martin standing behind her.

“Haven’t you found the dining room yet?” She glanced down to make sure her blouse was buttoned and tucked securely into the waistband of her wool slacks. The movement was not lost to her “guest.” He smiled that gorgeous, sexy smile and melted Elizabeth’s knees.

“You’re not in costume this morning,” he said.

“I learned it wasn’t practical.” She lifted her chin in the air. “You’re eavesdropping again, I see.”

He shrugged. “Sound carries on these marble floors. You’re not afraid your guests are listening?”

“No one is awake yet.” She looked at her watch. “Breakfast won’t be ready for another ten minutes.” She had a thousand things to do, and instead here she stood, wasting precious time sparring with the American. The American who had kissed her and glimpsed her breasts.

“So you are going to send me away?”

“Please lower your voice.” Elizabeth saw Ruckles move away from them. “Yes. I definitely think it would be best if you leave. I never should have believed this was possible in the first place.”

He didn’t seem upset with the news. “I wasn’t a good enough lord?”

“You just won’t do,” she fibbed. He was all easy charm and nice manners and disarming American frankness. He was broad shoulders and warm lips and brown eyes that twinkled with good humor.

“And if I refuse to go?”

He was also a royal pain. “I will call the constable.”

His eyebrows rose. “Really? How entertaining for the travel agents.” Sam smiled, just a little. “You’re bluffing, Lady Liz.” He leaned closer and whispered, “Are you still upset about that kiss?”

“I’m a little old to be upset by something so…trivial.” There. She waited for him to stomp off and pack his suitcase.

“That’s true. How old are you?”

“That’s none of your business.”

“Thirty? Women start getting sensitive about their age about that time of—”

“Twenty-eight.”

“Okay. Twenty-eight. And I’m not leaving, as much as I’d like to.”

“Oh, for heaven’s sake,” she hissed, trying to keep her temper. “This whole thing is ridiculous, and you and I both know it.”

“And you and I both know that my mother is in that ugly old bed upstairs, so it’s not that simple.
